I’m always chasing places that feel like they have a soul, places that don’t just sit on the land but belong to it. My recent stay at Desert Rock, Saudi Arabia near the Red Sea in the Hejaz Mountains wasn’t just a hotel stay; it was a total immersion into a landscape that feels ancient, powerful, and a little bit like a dream or a Star Wars movie set.
The Arrival: A Journey Through Time
The experience starts the moment you land at the Red Sea International Airport (RSI). The architecture of the airport itself is a tease for what’s to come. I was met by a private car for a 20-minute drive that felt like a transition into another world. As we entered the wadi—traditionally known as Shaqiq Al Theeb (The Passage of the Wolves), it felt like a scene straight out of Star Wars. This valley has been a gathering place for Bedouin tribes for centuries.
Architecture: Soft Monumentality
Designed by Oppenheim Architecture (also behind the Williamsburg Hotel), the resort is a masterclass in “soft monumentality”. They actually scanned 200 million rocks to ensure the construction was as non-disruptive as possible.
The villas in Desert Rock, Saudi Arabia, are carved into the mountain gaps and shaded slopes using local stone and mineral-based materials. In the daylight, the silhouettes are barely discernible, it’s architecture that honours the earth. Inside, Studio Paolo Ferrari has created a minimalist sanctuary with earthy tones, retro curves, and Frette linens that feel like sleeping on a cloud.
The Cave Suites
To get to your room, you walk through carpeted passageways carved directly through the rock. In my suite, the rugged boulders became the walls of the suite and completely surrounded the living space, making me feel like I was sleeping in a luxury cocoon within ancient history.

The Cliff Hanging Villas
Perched high on the mountain face, these one and two-bedroom retreats have an open layout with floor-to-ceiling glass to dissolve the boundary between the living space and the edge of the massif. Outside, the private infinity plunge pools are the focal point – positioned specifically to look out over the ancient volcanic valley. Each villa is fitted with Bang & Olufsen sound systems, perfect for setting the vibe while you get ready for dinner.

The Service: 10/10 Details
What really sets Desert Rock apart is the attention to detail. I’m quite particular about my dietary requirements, and often that means I get the “boring” version of a meal. Not here. The chefs recreated the same flavours and textures with clever replacements so I never felt left out for a second. Plus, the housekeeping team is meticulous; every time I came back, everything was folded to perfection.
The service is highly professional yet warm. Your dedicated Villa Host is available via WhatsApp, and whether you need a buggy or a fresh green juice, they often arrive in minutes. Even the poolside staff and buggy chauffeurs have an encyclopedic knowledge of the surrounding geology, they genuinely love this land!
Dining: From Turkish Fusion to the Best Shakshuka

Nyra & Mica
Nyra & Mica restaurant and bar, by Studio Paolo Ferrari, is Turkish fusion with primal wood-fire cooking and locally sourced ingredients create rich, flavourful dishes. Dinner in Nyra was close to Michelin star level for sure! The sunset from Mica terrace is amazing and fire is expressed through a varied approaches in materiality. The restaurant design honours both the site and the region’s broader rich cultural tradition of dining outdoors around an open fire.

Basalt
This is the heart of the resort. I took a cooking class here which was so insightful. By morning, it’s a buzzy breakfast spot serving what I can confidently say is one of the best shakshukas I’ve ever had. And we also spotted Jerry the Camel!

Traditional Tent Dinner
For a true taste of local culture, the outdoor tent dinner under the stars is unmissable. Think wood-fired local style barbecue cooking and an outdoor experience in the middle of the desert over traditional flavours.

The Observatory
If you’re feeling adventurous, take the 630-step climb to this high-altitude terrace between the highest rocks for sunset mocktails, shisha and afternoon tea. The suspension bridge offers amazing views above the whole resort and the view is worth every single step!

Akun Adventure Centre & Wellness

Via Ferrata
The Via Ferrata was exhilarating! I realized after I got there that I didn’t have appropriate trainers, but it didn’t matter. They provided brand-new Columbia hiking boots in every size! They also offer ziplining and all the way down the mountain for the true adrenaline junkies.
E-ATVs
While I was up on the mountains completing the Via Ferrata, my travel companions zipped through the valley on silent electric ATVs. Since Desert Rock, Saudi Arabia, is completely solar powered, this is one of the best ways to spot the local wildlife in the valley!
Stargazing
There very few places in the world where the sky felt so big and open. Like you can feel the whole galaxy above you and see the constellations slowly shift across the sky throughout the night. The local astronomers were also super knowledgeable and super passionate about the galaxy and let us see planets through a huge telescope.

The Spa
Carved into the stone, the spa is a work of art. I tried the Cellular Gold Rejuvenation Facial (part of the Desert Rock Signature Ritual), this facial uses 24-karat gold-plated massage stones, rollers, to lift, sculpt, and contour the skin. It’s luxury with a “cosmic” twist that smelled so good.

Environment and Sustainability
The land here is ancient. There’s so much history in these rocks, from 12,000-year-old carvings to the stories of the nomadic tribes. It’s also beautiful to see that the local wildlife has returned since construction ended. The entire resort runs entirely on solar power, and a massive replanting project has brought native olive trees back to the valley.

What to Pack & Final Thoughts
The Vibe: Chic, breathable loose linens for the day.
The Gear: Don’t worry about boots (they’ve got you), but bring moisture-wicking activewear for the hikes and activities, and a swimsuit for the pool.
The Night: The desert cools down fast! Pack a light sweater or a wrap for the stargazing sessions – a must do activity and the guides are so passionate and knowledgeable, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for the universe.
The only downside? The heat. It’s the desert, so it’s inevitable. But with those private pools, amazing iced mocktails and the cool, stone walls of the suites, you barely notice it.
